I made it through the first crazy day! I opened a lot of lunch containers for Kindergartners and got to meet the students I will meet with individually. Did some records work and met most of the staff. Everyone was so nice and excited to have another person on board! Although I am scared to start working with students one on one, it's nice to start right away. I have a lot to learn!
Also yesterday, there was a School Counselor Tweet Chat. A wonderful way to convene with others in the profession! I wanted to join in but wasn't able to get my run into the early morning hours so I decided that for self-care (one of the topics of the night) I should go out and get it done with, despite knowing I was physically exhausted. But as I slowly made it out my front door one of my roommates was walking in and encouraged (peer pressured) me to go to the cubs game instead. It was the out I wanted/needed. It was so nice to kick back and relax with friends. I have limited social time during the week which is hard because I'm an extrovert and need the interaction.
So overall a good first day and a good lesson that self-care (for me at least) can mean breaking the routine and relaxing. I'll get used to the new early morning schedule soon but for now I am content to push my runs off once and awhile to resume a somewhat normal life.
I second the opinion that self-care was the way to go last night.
